DALLAS – Texas reported 197 more deaths from COVID-19 on Sunday after a steady decline in the number of people hospitalized with coronavirus disease.
The Texas State Department of Health Services also reported Sunday 2,921 new confirmed cases of the virus and another 715 probable cases. The state has reported more than 2.28 million confirmed cases since the start of the pandemic and a total of 42,936 deaths.
The actual number of cases is believed to be much higher because many people have not been tested and some who get sick show no symptoms.
There were 5,696 people hospitalized with COVID-19 on Saturday in Texas, the most recent day for which state data were available. This is a decrease of more than 1,400 from a week earlier.
Over the past week, more than 15% of COVID-19 tests in Texas have tested positive, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. University researchers say Texas has completely vaccinated more than 6% of its population.
Announcements
For most people, coronavirus causes mild to moderate symptoms that clear up in a few weeks. But for other people, especially the elderly and people with existing health problems, the virus can cause serious illness and be fatal.
