Thailand launches a yacht quarantine plan

(CNN) – Currently, all visitors to Thailand have to spend 14 days in quarantine on arrival, but now they can choose a more luxurious way to wait for it, staying aboard a yacht.

The only problem: they will have to bring their own yacht.

The “Digital Yacht Quarantine” aims to attract yacht passengers to Phuket as the country reopens its visitors, according to a Thai Tourism Authority (TAT) press release released on Wednesday.

To take advantage of the new scheme, yacht passengers will be tested by Thai authorities and then provided with a digital health tracker.

The tracker will allow medical officials to monitor pulse, blood pressure and body temperature in real time.

Visitors must carry the tracker at all times and must remain within 10 kilometers of the coast, but otherwise they can spend the 14-day quarantine period as they wish.

Once this period has elapsed, officials will analyze the data and allow travelers to disembark in Phuket.

A version of the yacht quarantine plan was launched in October 2020, but the “digital project could attract more than 100 yachts and 300 to 500 visitors during 2021,” according to the press release.

“The expanded project seeks to build confidence in the Thai public health sector and create revenue streams and additional revenue for Phuket tour operators as the destination gradually reopens to more international visitors,” he continues.

The Thai government has also implemented a “golf quarantine” program to increase its sick tourism sector during the pandemic.

Visitors can fly into the country and spend quarantine at one of the five government-certified golf resorts.

On March 7, the first group of 42 visitors successfully completed their golf quarantine and were able to travel freely around the country, according to a TAT press release.
