This means that Californians over the age of 50 or those working in some jobs considered essential may have to wait weeks more to get even a first dose of protection.
“It’s too early to tell,” said Dr. Tomas Aragon, director of the California Department of Public Health. “We’re going to analyze the offer, we have analysts projecting all of that and we’ll see how many people get vaccinated. That helps determine when we make the next announcement.”

Meanwhile, California will target existing supply to those currently eligible, especially to the communities most affected by the virus and where vaccine distribution is lagging behind.
For Californians between the ages of 50 and 65 who hope to be eligible later than later, it seems that vaccination sites may be closed to them for at least a few more weeks, when states like Texas, Indiana and Ohio are already 50 .
“Here, at least in Northern California, we’ve really been respecting everything, social distancing, masks,” said Maureen O’Regan, who told us she felt younger friends and family in Texas who were already vaccinated. “So I just hate being behind on vaccines, when we’ve really done everything we should have done all the time.”

“So the real question is, when will there be enough vaccine to open up to the general population?” said Dr. Mike Wasserman, who is on the California Vaccine Advisory Committee. “I think it will be close to May at some point, but I don’t know if we know the exact date.”
