SAINT ANTHONY – San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg briefed the community on the local response to COVID-19 in its daily session Friday evening.
Nirenberg reported 143,503 COVID-19 cases in total and 1,710 deaths in total in Bexar County, an increase of 2,889 new cases. Six virus-related deaths were confirmed on Friday.
The 7-day moving average of cases is 2,041, a significant increase and the highest it has been since the start of the pandemic, Nirenberg said.
While these figures are a cause for concern, Nirenberg said hospitalization figures continued to show a slight improvement.
City officials reported that 1,387 patients are hospitalized, a decrease of 20 from Thursday. Intensive care units reported 403 patients, an increase from 382. Of those patients, 243 went with ventilators, compared to 231 on Thursday.
There are 10% beds available and 53% fans.
Officials continued to ask about patients from the public as they worked with the deployment of vaccine doses on the limited shipments they receive. Until then, they advised the public to continue to practice good social distancing to mitigate the spread of the virus.
