One of R. Kelly’s accusations broke down in the stands on Monday as she recalled the moment she learned she had contracted the dishonored singer’s herpes when she was just a teenager, describing the pain so intense she couldn’t walk.
The woman, who was identified in court as Jane Doe 5, told jurors she met Kelly at a hotel when she was a 17-year-old high school student after one of her concerts in Orlando, Florida. During that first meeting, Kelly “pressured her equally” to let him have oral sex with her, he stated. After that, Jane Doe 5, who had told Kelly she was 18, reunited with the singer at several of her concerts across the country.
Months later, he said he began to experience intense pain every time they had sex.
“I would have discomfort in my pelvis and lower abdomen,” the woman, now 23, told Brooklyn federal court jurors in Kelly’s layout and sex crimes trial. “He got to the point where he couldn’t even walk physically.”
The pain became so severe that Kelly ended up scheduling a medical appointment for Jane Doe 5, at which point she learned she had contracted vaginal herpes. When she told Kelly, the Grammy-winning singer was “agitated” and insisted she may have suffered from the disease months before she met, but told her she had only been intimate with him, the woman said.
“This man purposely gave me something I knew I had. That I could have controlled, ”Jane Doe 5 said angrily in the stands as Kelly sat without emotion.
Jane Doe 5 is the second indictment to take a stand against the revered R&B singer. Prosecutors have reported that Kelly abused at least six women and girls, four of them minors when he first had sexual contact with them. At least two say they contracted herpes after Kelly consciously exposed them to the disease.
Kelly, 54, faces a plethora of charges, including charges based on kidnapping, child sexual exploitation and forced labor. He is also accused of violating the Mann Act, which prohibits the transportation of people across state lines by sex.
“He had mentioned rules … protocols that he should follow in his presence,” Jane Doe 5 said Monday, adding that the rules began to appear when she traveled with Kelly for her shows. “He wanted me to call him father.”
“He would control every time we were intimate,” he added later. “He told me I was walking back and forth and that would be what I would have to do until he gave me another direction.”
Jerhonda Pace, a mother of four, who claimed she was sexually and physically abused by Kelly when she was 16, also testified last week that the singer gave her herpes. He said throughout his relationship, Kelly never wore a condom or told him he had a sexually transmitted disease.
Dr. Kris G. McGrath, a professor at Northwestern University and a former Kelly primary care physician, testified Thursday that he began prescribing the singer’s medication to treat herpes symptoms at least since 2007, but who was aware of the possibility that Kelly might have herpes in 2000. After the visit, McGrath said, he told Kelly to inform his sexual partners about the possible diagnosis.
But Jane Doe 5 said in 2015 she had unprotected sex with Kelly for months before she found out she had herpes.
Initially claiming she was 18, Jane Doe 5 said she began traveling with Kelly shortly after meeting him in 2015. During those trips, she was forced to stay inside her hotel room, wear loose clothing and ask permission from Kelly whenever she made a move, she told jurors.
“Every time we had sex, he would record it,” she said.
Jane Doe 5 said she ended up spending the rest of the summer before her senior year of high school in Chicago, where she was confined to hotel rooms and Kelly’s studio. She said that since the studio had no bathrooms and “couldn’t leave without calling her,” she would often be forced to urinate in very large cups at a nearby gas station.
There was also “tissue paper and baby wipes” in the room, Jane Doe 5 told jurors Monday.
At the end of the summer, Jane Doe 5 explained how she was “afraid” to finally admit to Kelly that she was in fact a minor. When she spilled the secret of the hot dogs at Lincoln Park, she said Kelly laughed at her before slapping her with her open palm and walking away.
Hours later, he found her in the park and convinced her to return with him. “He kissed me and said we would understand,” he said.
After consulting with his attorneys, Jane Doe 5 said she eventually moved to Chicago to live with him and that she was schooled at home, with her parents ’permission. He ended up living with Kelly for five years.
The dishonored singer has pleaded guilty to all charges against him and has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing. Throughout the trial, Kelly’s defense team has argued that all of her accusers had consensual relationships with the singer, and called liars who “have an agenda.”
Prosecutors also allege that Kelly bribed an Illinois government employee with $ 500 to obtain a false welfare ID to marry “Princess of R&B” Aaliyah in 1994.
“It simply came to our notice then. It was wrong, “said Demetrius Smith, Kelly’s former marriage manager, on Monday. “I shouldn’t be talking about Aaliyah, she’s not here.”
Smith, who was forced to testify and granted immunity, told jurors Friday that he helped Kelly get a fake health care card for the teenage singer so she could marry him in 1994. had date of birth, was one of the two letters that Smith helped the singers obtain illegally to be able to marry. At the time, Aaliyah, who was then 15, had said she thought she was pregnant, she said.
“They were more than friends from the beginning,” Smith said of the relationship, which began when Aaliyah was a teenager. “I just thought they were too playful.”
Smith clashed Friday with Judge Ann Donnelly and prosecutors Friday as he reluctantly described how he flew with Kelly from an Orlando program in Chicago in August 1994, after the singer revealed that Aaliyah had “problems, man. “. During the plane trip, Smith said Kelly was “worried” because she worried about going to jail if the teenage singer was pregnant. Smith insisted he never believed Aaliyah was pregnant.
