Apple didn’t include any power buttons on the AirPods Max, so there’s no definitive way to turn them off, but Apple says putting the headphones inside the included smart box puts them in a mode ultra low power supply.
We leave a lot of questions about what happens to irAirPods Max when they are not yet actively used in the box, so we did some testing to try to find out what happens.
Youtuber Marks Brownlee (also known as MKBHD) has said that the irAirPods Max go into sleep mode after about two hours when they are just taken out of the head and put somewhere, and it looks like the irAirPods Max are they stay actively connected to an iPhone for hours at a time.
At 9:00 a.m. Pacific time, yesterday morning, we connected the irAirPods Max to an iPhone, played a song, and then took them out and left them on a desk. At that time, the battery was at 63 percent.
At 10:00 in the morning, the irAirPods Max were still connected, and the same goes for 11:00 in the morning. During this period, the irAirPods Max dropped to approximately 62% around 10:00 and remained at that level until 11:26 before dropping to 60 percent battery life.
At 12:00, three hours later, the “AirPods Max” stayed connected to the “iPhone” via Bluetooth and did not disconnect or go to sleep. During this time, the iPhone was in use for various activities and also in a sleep mode where it was not in active use. The irAirPods Max were left alone and did not touch each other.
For a period of four hours, the irAirPods Max were not disconnected and the battery life was exhausted by three percent.
With a second set of “AirPods Max” and a different “iPhone” that was left out and not used, we left them plugged in for over two and a half hours and saw the same percentage of battery drop it was two percent. The youtuber Andru Edwards did a similar test and saw that three percent of the battery ran out over 10 hours with the AirPods Max sitting on the desk.
After monitoring irAirPods Max for a period of four hours, we put them in the case at 1:00 pm When placed in the case, the irAirPods Max were immediately disconnected from the PiPhone and no longer appeared connected to Bluetooth or battery levels listed.
We left the irAirPods Max in the case to test the battery drain while we were in the “ultra low power mode” announced by Apple. From 1:00 pm Pacific time to 5:00 pm Pacific time, the irAirPods Max drained approximately one percent while in the case. The battery was at 60 percent when they left the box at 1:00 and at 59 percent when they left the box at 5:00.
It seems that an hour of music playback on the musicAirPods Max with active noise cancellation runs out about four to five percent of the battery. Andru Edwards saw that 3% of the battery ran out in 10 hours and, leaving a set of irAirPods Max all night, we saw 8% of total battery, so the amount of listening you will lose will vary.
Thus, while the AirPods Max do you need the case to switch to a low power mode which is the equivalent of a sleep mode, leaving them out and plugged into your devices is not the biggest hit of the battery if you don’t want to bother putting them in the cover out. However, if you want maximum battery life, you need to put them in the case.
We still don’t have a definitive answer on when sleepAirPods Max sleep out of the case because they never seemed to disconnect from the iPhone in our tests without the case, but we now have a better idea of what happens when used without a case.
