A U.S. Army sergeant who was on vacation leave was found deadly in Texas, military officials said.
Sergeant. Jessica Mitchell, who was assigned to San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston Joint Base, was found with multiple gunshot wounds around three in the morning on New Year’s Day in a vehicle along the interstate. 10 of San Antonio, as reported by the WTXF news station.
The 30-year-olds were found by firefighters responding to the report of a vehicle collision.
The Dodge Challenger where Mitchell was discovered had bullet holes in the driver’s side door and window, the San Antonio Express-News reported.
Mitchell, who had no pulse, was taken to University Hospital, where she was pronounced dead Friday, according to the base.
“We are devastated by the tragic loss of Drilling Sergeant Jessica Mitchell. Our sincerest condolences are addressed to his family and friends, “Major General Dennis LeMaster said in a statement obtained by Express-News.
“We are focused on supporting Drill Sergeant Mitchell’s family and their soldiers during this extremely difficult time.”
Mitchell, a dental specialist, had been assigned to the U.S. Army Center of Medical Excellence since August 2019 and previously worked at a joint-based dental clinic, according to military officials.
The Army Criminal Investigation Division and the San Antonio Police Department have launched an investigation into his shooting death.
Her sister said Mitchell had posted at least one post on social media about “ringing the new year” hours before her body was discovered.
“Why would anyone want to do that? Why do people commit such heinous crimes for no reason? “Sister Ashley Mitchell told WTXF.
His death comes just days after partial skeletal remains were found near Salado Creek at the base.
Officials said it was “too premature” to release more details about the discovery on Dec. 27.
It is not clear how a body would end up at the base as it is closed and closed to the public.
