A Kansas City Chiefs assistant coach is under investigation after he was involved in a car accident that left a 5-year-old boy with fatal injuries.
Britt Reid, outside defense coach and son of head coach Andy Reid, suffered a car accident Thursday near Kansas City Chiefs Stadium, according to a report from the Missouri Kansas City Police Department obtained by ESPN.
The collision occurred between three vehicles: Reid’s and two others parked on the side of the road. A car had run out of gas on the ramp onto Interstate 435, so the driver called for help from relatives.
While the two were parked next to the ramp, Reid crashed into the car that ran out of gas and ended up with the second car, which injured a 4-year-old boy and a 5-year-old boy with injuries that put them in life threatening. . The two children were taken to hospital, according to the report.
A police officer statement obtained by ESPN says the site officer could smell “a moderate smell of alcohol” and see that Reid’s eyes were injected with blood.
Reid, who has a history of driving under the influence, admitted he drank a couple of drinks before driving, along with prescribed Adderall, according to the statement. Reid ended up complaining of stomach problems and is now in the hospital.
Reid’s injuries are unknown, but he could be in the hospital for days, a source told ESPN. Another source said Reid will not be going to the Superbowl on Sunday with his team.
Police said ESPN charges will not be filed until next week, if received. No other car accident resulted in fatal injuries.
“The organization has been informed of a multi-vehicle accident that affected Linebackers outside coach Britt Reid,” the chiefs said in a statement. “We are in the process of gathering information and we will have no further comment at this time. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved.”
