Dr. Nick Gilpin said Thursday (April 14) that he agreed with the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. who believes Michigan should close to combat the alarming extension of COVID-19.

He noted how COVID-19 metrics improved after the order to stay home last spring and the two-and-a-half-month break this winter.
“If you also look back at our previous climbs, what was the difference?” Gilpin asked. “The difference in the first wave we experienced is that there were restrictions in the community to limit collection sizes and limit indoor activities that we know are very effective ways to transmit the coronavirus. We saw it in March and April last year. We saw it during the fall and winter months in Michigan, and I think both floods, in part, we curved because of active restrictions. “
Gilpin and CDC director Dr. Rochelle Walensky said it would be difficult for Michigan to reverse its metrics simply depending on vaccinations.
“It takes six weeks for the vaccine to reach maximum effectiveness,” Gilpin said. For example, someone who gets the Modern vaccine (which requires two shots 28 days apart) will not get the full benefit for six weeks.

He said Governor Gretchen Whitmer, who has said several times in the last week that he has no plans to demand further restrictions, is in a very difficult position to balance the virus with the “radioactive political environment”.
But with the case and statewide positivity rates five times higher than in mid-February, he believes the right measure is to issue more restrictions.
“At a time like this, right now, in southeast Michigan and Michigan in general, I think we need to be a little more prescriptive right now,” Gilpin said.
