The latest Edge Chromium update, version 88, is finally being implemented. This release adds many new features to the Windows and macOS versions of the browser, such as new password security tools, an updated look, and several improvements in quality of life. It’s a lot, so we’ll review everything new in Edge 88 and show you how to use it.
Password generator and security monitor
Headlining Edge 88 update notes are two great password features. The first is a random password generator that automatically creates passwords every time you create a new account or update an existing password. Edge saves your password and fills it in automatically so you don’t have to memorize it.
The other new password tool is automated data breach control. Edge makes cross-references to the saved login information with the latest data breaches and will notify you if you believe any of your accounts are compromised.

Both features require you to sign in to Edge with a Microsoft account and turn on password synchronization below. Settings> Profile> Sync> Passwords. To enable the password generator:
- Go to Settings> Profile> Passwords.
- Switch on “Offer save passwords” i “Suggest secure passwords”.
Now, whenever you enter a new password, Edge will offer you to create it. Password control is automatic and applies to any login saved to Edge. You can find them below Settings> Profile> Passwords> Saved Passwords.
Sleeping tabs
Users can now set inactive tabs to “sleep” after a set time. Edge stops checking the sleeping tabs in the background, freeing up your PC’s memory and CPU for use elsewhere. Seconds Bleeping Computer, reduces the memory usage of an inactive tab by an average of 32% and CPU usage by approximately 37%.
Users will see a pop-up notification suggesting that they turn on sleep tabs to reduce Edge resource usage, but you can configure the settings in Settings> System> Save Resources. You can choose how long a tab should be inactive before going to bed or set specific websites to never sleep.
Sidebar sclose
You can now search the web without opening any new tabs or leaving the page where you are. Just highlight a word right-click> Search. A sidebar with the search results will open.
New aspects
Edge 88 also changes the look of the browser, including new “Fluent Design” interface icons that match other Microsoft products, and more than 24 new browser themes that you can use to customize the look of Edge.
Each theme has its own color scheme and wallpaper. Wallpaper selections include works of art from Microsoft’s first-hand video game properties such as Halo, Forza, Sea of Thieves, and more; Wonder Woman 1984; and some original designs. You can preview and install them from the new Edge Add-ons page.
Other news
