Earlier this month we covered the then upcoming Hubworld 2021, a digital event similar to a Nintendo Direct, but built by fans and independent developers and focused solely on 3D platforms. Today, Hubworld live shows have been released and included more than twenty fun-looking games, including some classic-inspired games like Spyro i Banjo-Kazooie.
The full video, posted above, contains about 40 minutes of trailers and game images from new, upcoming or recently released independent platforms. The event was hosted by two lively, voice-over characters: Kiwi and Melon, and is as sleek and well-assembled as anything I’ve seen at major events and on Nintendo Directs. Many of the games featured at the event are equally impressive.
Zera: Myths wake up
One that caught my eye immediately is Zera: Myths wake up, which visually closely resembles the classic PS1 platform game Spyro The dragon. This makes sense considering that the game started in 2017 as a Spyro fan game, but in recent years it has evolved a lot. You can now play an Early Game version of the game using itch.io.
Hell Pie
Hell Pie is a colorful action platform game which includes an ugly, chained little angel and a cool-looking demon who “works” together to fight the bad guys and go through several levels. I’m interested in any game that describes itself as “Filthy 3D Platformer”. Hell Pie comes out this year.

Frogun
This game looks like a modern PS1 game. I often remember what PS1 games looked like, much better before going back and looking at them and remembering how messy they often were. Frogun It seems like those PS1 games were in my head before reality reminded me otherwise. It also includes a frog that you use as a gun to fight heads. Consoles and PCs will arrive sometime next year.
Psilosybil
After a few moments watching the Psilosybil trailer, I yelled at myself, “Oh … this is like a new retro version of Crash Bandicoot!” I’m a little nervous about playing it because the trailer explains how hard it will be, but it looks and sounds so good that I don’t care. I will suffer to enjoy it. Psilosybil came out later this year, but you can play it well now on Steam.
These are just some of the games that have caught my attention the most. The full live includes many more, some clearly inspired by the classic and others more modern or unique. Watch the full video to see them all and you can follow the Hubworld Twitter account to stay up to date on future events and directions.
