The state of Sao Paulo, in southeastern Brazil, the epicenter of the country’s Covid-19 outbreak, said Tuesday it will double blockade measures to curb the spread of the new coronavirus over the Christmas and New Year holidays.
Non-essential businesses will close again from Dec. 25-27 and Jan. 1-3 as part of a return to the red emergency phase of the pandemic, he told a news conference. the Secretary of Economic Development of Sao Paulo, Patricia Ellen.
There will be essential services, such as public transportation, supermarkets, pharmacies and bakeries, but with a very limited schedule, Xinhua news agency reported.
“Sao Paulo is making the decisions that this moment requires,” Ellen said, adding that “this is not a time for parties or crowds.”
Covid-19 deaths in Sao Paulo rose 34% in four weeks, alarming authorities, especially with year-end celebrations. The state has recorded 45,395 deaths from Covid-19, of the more than 1,87,000 deaths recorded throughout Brazil, which has the second highest number of deaths in the world for Covid-19.
