LINCOLN, Neb. – The full CDC review of the death of a Nebraska man who had received a COVID-19 vaccine is complete. The CDC found no evidence that the vaccine contributed to the man’s death and, in his view, was “accidental.”
According to the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services, a man in his 40s with various comorbidities died 1 to 2 weeks after receiving his first dose of COVID-19 vaccine. The man was also a resident of a long-term care center.
The death was introduced in VAERS, the vaccine adverse event reporting system, a national vaccine safety monitoring program run by CDC and the FDA. Whenever death or any adverse event occurs after vaccination, the case should be reported to VAERS. This process allows the CDC and the FDA to closely monitor and evaluate adverse events for ongoing safety assessments. The death occurred on January 17 and the man received the vaccine in the first week of January.
Dr. Gary Anthone, Nebraska’s medical director, said: “We can’t say enough about the importance of Nebraska ending up strong as we see a light at the end of the tunnel with three vaccines available in our state. It’s just the best protection we have and the best chance to get back to normal.I urge Nebraskans to sign up for vaccinate.Ne.Gov to be notified when it touches them. Those people who have high risk conditions should consult their healthcare provider about the best way to be vaccinated ”.
