Dogs are descendants of wolves, but the two are not the same, unless you are apparently a zoo keeper in central China.
Visitors to the Xiangwushan Zoo in Xianning, Hubei Province, China, were confused this week when they found a rottweiler at the wolf enclosure.
The video of a visitor went viral after filming the caged animal as he said, “Woof! Are you a wolf?”
The man who filmed the footage told Beijing News (via the BBC) that staff told him “there had been a wolf (once), but he had died of old age”.
Local media reported that zoo employees claimed the dog would only be there shortly, but that the zoo, which also has (real) lions and tigers. now the local forest office asked him to remove the sign leading to the enclosure.
Social media in China did not slow down. On Weibo, a commenter said, “At the very least, get a husky (he’ll look more like a wolf).”
Since then, the zoo has been told to remove the “wolf” sign. No word on the future of the rottweiler.
