The city press conference details the release of Modern vaccines

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Officials from the city of Corpus Christi and Nueces County will hold a joint press conference at 11:30 a.m. today to brief the public on the 4,000 doses of Modern vaccine schedule that will arrive Monday.

City / County Health Director Annette Rodriguez and other city leaders will appear at the press conference.

“This is an exciting day for Corpus Christi,” Mayor Joe McComb said. “But we will advise people to have a great deal of patience.”

Officials said vaccinations are expected to begin Monday at noon at the Richard Borchard Center at the fairgrounds. 1213 Blvd. Terry Shamsie. in Robstown.

Registration will begin online starting at 5pm on Sunday at the city coronarivus website link here. Registration will continue until the number of assigned entries is reached for the next day.

When a person does so through the registration process, they will be issued a QR code that will be displayed to officials at the time of vaccination. You are asked to take a photo of this code to take to the vaccination site. It is a unique code and cannot be shared with others.

The vaccination process will target two groups: those over 65 and those aged 18 and over with chronic diseases such as cancer, COPD, diabetes, heart disease, sickle cell disease and pregnancies.

Nueces County Judge Barbara Canales borrowed a couple of references to “Field of Dreams,” a film she said was one of her favorites, to describe the county’s plans to distribute the vaccine.

“If you build it, they will come,” Canales said. “And the reason we built the infrastructure is the same answer that was given to (Field of Dreams star) Kevin Costner. To relieve pain. That’s what we’re doing to relieve our pain. with COVID-19 “.

Officials hope to be able to distribute 4,000 first-dose doses of the vaccine next week. This would then pave the way for additional doses of the state when these are depleted.

Canales said the Corpus Christi area has been designated a “megasite,” meaning it is intended to serve those interested in receiving the vaccine from outside the county.

“The sad truth is that our population is at more risk than others in the state,” Canales said. “We have 50 percent more of our population 65 and older than the rest of the state. That’s very compelling. In addition, we have more people without insurance and more with a lower average income than the rest of the state. state “.

There will only be 500 doses of vaccine available through online registration, Canales said.

The site will be closed once the 500 doses have been counted.

Another 500 doses will be reserved for those who do not have access to a computer.
