Centipede: Recharged, a reimagining of the classic Atari hit Centipede, is launching on Switch and other platforms on September 29, it has been announced.
The game is the first in a new Atari initiative that will make several of its classic arcade titles receive renewed treatment for modern audiences. “We’re very excited to bring these classic games that define the genre to modern consoles,” says Wade Rosen, CEO of Atari. “Our goal is to create faithful adaptations that transcend nostalgia and style, and we look forward to offering this to old-school fans who loved Centipede as children and to a new generation of gamers who appreciate high-quality arcade action and the aesthetics of the 80s “.
If you’re unfamiliar with the original, or if you weren’t still alive when it was released in 1981, the game instructs players to shoot centipedes as they descend the screen and work around the mushrooms blocking the shots they leave behind. . This new Recharged edition adds some cool sound powers, such as explosive bullets, stretch shots, and a railroad gun.
It includes an arcade mode for individual players or fans of the sofa co-op, world leaderboards and an 80s-inspired soundtrack by award-winning composer Megan McDuffee. The 4K, 120 fps game available on PS5 and Xbox Series X will sadly skip Switch, of course, but here we hope it’s still a gift on Nintendo’s platform when it arrives next month.
