The Coast Guard is searching for a missing boat with 20 people on board bound for Palm Beach County from the Bahamas

LAKE WORTH BEACH, Florida – Coast Guard officials said Wednesday they were looking for a wrecked boat with about 20 people on board headed from the Bahamas to Lake Worth beach.

Officials said they received a report Tuesday that the boat, a 29-foot blue and white cabin, Mako Cuddy, was known to be leaving Bimini on Monday, but did not arrive as expected.

According to the Coast Guard, it was reported that the boat and people were en route to Lake Worth Beach.

The Coast Guard said they were alerted Wednesday by the Royal Bahamas Defense Force asking for help locating the ship.

“They didn’t have the name of the boat, they said there were about 20 people on board, who didn’t specifically have their nationality or any name to continue,” José Hernández told the U.S. Coast Guard.

Hernandez said that since five in the morning the Coast Guard has been in the Atlantic helping with the search.

“In this case, we don’t really have the location except the final destination, so we’re just looking for the gulf stream between the Bahamas and South Florida,” he said.

Hernandez said conducting a registration requires a lot of labor.

“They take into account the size of the boat, the amount of gasoline, the engine it has. Then there are other people who represent the real currents, the real time,” he said.

Below are the agencies and crews searching for the missing ship:

  • Clearwater Coast Guard Air Station C-130 Hercules aircrew
  • Miami Coast Guard Air Station HC-144 Ocean Sentry air crew
  • Coast Guard Crew Margaret Norvel
  • Surface units of the Royal Defense Bahamas
  • Air assets of the Bahamas Air Sea Rescue Association

The Coast Guard said there was no timetable for how long they would continue searching for the boat.

Anyone who can assist in the search is asked to contact the Coast Guard’s Seven District Command Center at 305-415-6800.
