San Diego County has reached a bleak milestone in the COVID-19 pandemic, reporting a total of 2,005 San Diego people lost to the virus. This includes an additional 53 deaths reported today to the County Agency for Health and Human Services.
The deaths reported today include a 19-year-old man, the youngest San Diegan who died of complications from COVID-19.
“Our deepest condolences are addressed to the family and friends of this teenager and to the families and friends of the more than 2,000 San Diego residents who have died of COVID-19 during this pandemic,” said Wilma J. Wooten, MD, MPH, county public health officer. “We understand that the pandemic has been testing the community, but today’s report reminds us that we must do everything we can to protect each other and curb the spread of COVID-19.”
Wooten continues to urge San Diegans to do the following:
- Wash your hands
- Watch your distance from others
- Wear a mask
- When you are sick, stay home and take the test

Order capacity and stay at the ICU:
- The current availability of intensive care unit (ICU) beds for the Southern California region is 0.0% and the state will update it daily.
- He Regional order of stay at home it is in force and prohibits meetings of any size with people from other households and adds restrictions for various sectors.
- The order will last until the availability of the ICU in the region meets or exceeds 15%.
Community configuration outbreaks:
- On January 13, eight new community outbreaks were confirmed: five in business settings, one in a community-based organization, one in a daycare / preschool / daycare, and one in a government setting.
- In the last seven days (January 7-13), 48 outbreaks of the community were confirmed.
- The number of community outbreaks remains above the trigger for seven or more days.
- An outbreak of community environment is defined as three or more cases of COVID-19 in one environment and in people from different households during the last 14 days.
Tests:
- On January 13, 42,878 tests were reported in the county and the percentage of new positive cases was 6%.
- The average percentage of 14-day positive cases is 13.6%. The target is less than 8.0%.
- The average daily test for 7 days is 27,146.
- People at higher risk for COVID-19 who may or may not have symptoms should be tested. People with any symptoms should get tested. Health care workers and essential workers should also be tested, as well as people who have had close contact with a positive case or live in communities that are being severely affected. Those who have recently returned from travel or who have participated in holiday meetings are also urged.
Cases:
- On January 13, 2,595 cases were reported in the county. The total for the region is 204,175.
- 6,809 or 3.3% of all cases required hospitalization.
- 1,280 or 0.6% of all cases and 18.8% of hospitalized cases had to be admitted to an intensive care unit.
Deaths:
- On January 13, 53 new deaths from COVID-19 were reported in the county. The total for the region is 2,005.
- 23 women and 30 men died between November 28 and January 13.
- Of the 53 new deaths reported on January 13, 27 people who died were 80 or older, 13 people were 70, eight were 60, three were 50, one was 20 and one was a teenager.
- 51 had underlying medical conditions, one did not have them and one had a pending medical history.
