The new variant of SARS-CoV-2, which is believed to have originated in the UK, is growing rapidly and affecting a higher proportion of people under the age of 20, according to a study. A collaborating team of researchers from Imperial College London, the University of Edinburgh, Public Health England, the Wellcome Sanger Institute, the University of Birmingham and the Covid-19 Genomics UK Consortium evaluated the relationship between transmission and the frequency of the new variant over a period of time.
“There is a consensus among all analyzes that VOC (the variant of concern or new variant) has a substantial transmission advantage,” the study said.
According to the study, the reproduction number of the new variant is currently between 1.4 and 1.8. He stated that the estimated difference between the number of reproduction of the mutation is 0.4 to 0.7 higher compared to other variants of the virus. Reproduction numbers reflect the number of people expected to be infected by a single individual in a homogeneous population.

L’estudi també va trobar que les persones menors de 20 anys representen una proporció més alta de casos de malaltia de coronavirus (Covid-19) infectats amb la nova variant. No obstant això, els investigadors van dir que és massa aviat per determinar el mecanisme que hi ha darrere d’aquest canvi. Van suggerir que podria ser en part perquè el bloqueig estava vigent en alguns llocs, però les escoles estaven obertes.

El doctor Erik Volz, coautor de l’estudi, va dir que molt poques vegades un virus canviarà d’una manera que requereixi una nova avaluació de la política de salut pública. Volz va afegir que hi ha proves aclaparadores d’un canvi de transmissibilitat de la nova variant que s’hauria de tenir en compte a l’hora de planificar la resposta del Covid-19 el nou any.
