“I said,‘ I was right there. I got it on my command camera. ”And she was like,“ I don’t believe you. ”And she left,” Cam Pursel said.
Video of the Pursel control camera captured a car and a bicycle at the Spring Garden Bridge on Thursday morning, but the driver continued and left the cyclist on the ground.
“I was driving, and I see next to me this guy turns upside down as this car passes by and I think it’s weird that he could have broken like a bunch of bones,” Pursel said.
Pursel hit the gasoline and followed the driver of the I-76 with his still-rolling control camera. Finally, the woman behind the wheel stopped.
“She says,‘ Hey, what’s up? Why are you following me? And I say to myself, “You just hit someone. You should probably go back and see if it’s okay.” And it’s like, “I didn’t hit anyone,” Pursel said.
Philadelphia police said the video clearly shows the two came into contact and added that the woman’s right mirror is being pushed. Police also said the cyclist is lucky to be alive.
“The driver may not know this immediately, but if you look closely at the video, you’ll see that the driver almost stops before you reach this ramp and then start again,” said Captain Mark Above, with the Philadelphia Police Accident Investigation Division.
That’s why cyclists like Joe Cox, a bicycle food delivery driver, have a bold sign on his bike for cars to stay within four feet of him. If you drive a car in Pennsylvania and want to pass a cyclist on the street, state law requires you to give them four feet.
Bike Coalition of Greater Philadelphia told Action News that streets have been emptied due to the pandemic, speeds have risen, leading to an increase in road fatalities in 2020.
“You have to be very aggressive and defensive on a bike in Philadelphia because you don’t know how the driver will act,” Cox said.
Police said the cyclist must show up and report and hold the driver accountable.
Police said the cyclist was not doing anything wrong as to where he was driving as he was in a bike lane.
