MADISON, Russia. (WBAY): The delta variant, more contagious and more severe than the original coronavirus, is the dominant virus in Wisconsin.
The Wisconsin State Hygiene Laboratory says 98.53% of the samples it tested for COVID-19 cases in the week of Aug. 9 were the delta variant. And so far, the delta variant represents 100% of the 43 samples tested as of the week of August 16th. There was a single sample of the alpha variant tested from that week, of the 208 sequenced samples. Only a fraction of Wisconsin COVID-19 cases perform genetic testing, but sampling tells health officials which variants are spreading and when new strains appear.
Wisconsin is following the pace of the total vaccination of 3 million residents this week against coronavirus disease, possibly Wednesday. Currently, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) reports that 2,988,182 Wisconsinites received two doses of Pfizer or Modern vaccine or the unique Johnson & Johnson vaccine. It is 51.3% of the population if 14% are included who are not eligible to receive vaccine: children under 12 years. As adults only, 61.9% of Wisconsinites 18 years of age or older completed their vaccine series.
That is, of the 3,177,325 people who started the series of vaccines, 54.6% of the population, including 65.5% of adults. We can also predict at this rate that in 2 or 3 weeks, Wisconsin may declare that 2 out of 3 adults in Wisconsin have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.
The number of people in Wisconsin who are not vaccinated decreases by almost 7,000 a day (6,914) according to our 7-day average calculation. This is the highest average of new vaccines since June 8.
Meanwhile, as more students return to school, 16- and 17-year-olds are almost equal to young adults in the percentage of their vaccinated age group, from 48.3% to 48.4%. Since Friday’s report there have been big jumps in the percentages of young people aged 12 to 17 vaccinated.
Wisconsinites receiving the COVID-19 vaccine, by age groups (and changed since last report)
- 12-15: 41.9% received vaccine (+0.7) / 35.1% fully vaccinated (+0.8)
- 16-17: 48.3% received vaccine (+0.5) / 42.9% fully vaccinated (+0.5)
- 18-24: 48.4% received vaccine (+0.4) / 43.6% fully vaccinated (+0.3)
- 25-34: 52.3% received vaccine (+0.3) / 48.1% completely vaccinated (+0.2)
- 35-44: 60.4% received vaccine (+0.3) / 56.3% completely vaccinated (+0.3)
- 45-54: 62.2% received vaccine (+0.3) / 58.6% fully vaccinated (+0.2)
- 55-64: 71.7% received vaccine (+0.2) / 68.7% fully vaccinated (+0.3)
- 65 years or older: 84.7% received vaccine (+0.0) / 82.7% fully vaccinated (+0.1)
Exactly 50% of Wisconsin whites received at least one “arm shot,” according to vaccinators. They are 2,565,796 people. Whites join Asians as the only races with more than half of their populations vaccinated. DHS reports that 47.5% of whites are fully vaccinated, with an Asian sit at 50.8%. DHS says 38.5% of American Indians and 31.3% of Wisconsin blacks have started at least their vaccine series (34.5% and 27.6% of the population, respectively, have completed the series of vaccinations).
Cases, deaths and hospitalizations
Wisconsin averages nearly 1,700 cases a day (1,692), according to DHS figures Monday. According to our count, the state recorded a net increase of 3,666 cases since the last report on Friday. The state says there have been 899 confirmed cases in the last 24 hours.
DHS also reports that 7.9% of tests in the last 7 days returned positive. On Saturday, August 28, the positivity rate reached 8.2%, the first time it has surpassed 8% since mid-January. Prior to Friday, the positivity rate had been relatively constant between 7.2% and 7.6% throughout that month.
Since Friday’s report, seven more deaths have been reported by COVID-19, including one death each in Dodge, Fond du Lac and Waupaca counties. No deaths were reported in the state on Monday, keeping the average of seven days at eight deaths a day. The number of COVID-19 deaths in Wisconsin is 7,584. The mortality rate fell for the fifth time this month and is now 1.15% of all cases dating back to early 2020. As we have reported, health officials accredit vaccinations by the percentage of fatal cases that decreases although the case rate increases, because vaccines significantly reduce the chances of a severe COVID-19 infection and increase the chances of being asymptomatic.
Later in this article the totals of cases and deaths by county are detailed.
As of Friday, 143 more COVID-19 patients had been admitted to hospitals. According to our calculations, the state made an average of 111 admissions per day COVID-19 over the past week: the first time the 7-day average exceeded 100 since January 16 and the highest average since January 12.
He Wisconsin Hospital Association (WHA) reports that there are currently 911 people hospitalized with COVID-19, with 293 in intensive care. The last time Wisconsin admitted more than 900 COVID-19 patients at a time was Jan. 16, when there were also 911 patients, including 212 in intensive care. Wisconsin has not had as many COVID-19 patients in the ICU since Dec. 17. DHS says 88.5% of Wisconsin hospital beds are in use, including 92.1% of ICU beds, with just over half of the state’s 136 hospitals saying their UCI. they are at full capacity. However, 89.9% of hospitals say they have immediate beds.
Fox Valley hospitals are treating 80 COVID-19 patients, with 19 of them in the ICU. It’s the same number in the ICU as on Friday, but there are 3 more patients overall.
In the northeastern health region, hospitals treat 75 COVID-19 patients, with 21 in the ICU. That is, 1 more patient in the ICU and 1 more patient in general compared to Friday.
