The Secretary of the Department of Labor and Human Resources, Carlos J. Rivera Santiago, has announced that claimants for unemployment insurance will be able to extend their benefits, once exhausted, in the same system where the subsequent weeks.
“Our system has been updated; anyone claiming unemployment insurance who has exhausted their benefits will be able to make their extension for an additional 13 weeks under the PEUC Program automatically, answering questions that will appear prior to making their claim of subsequent weeks, “Rivera Santiago explained.
“The claimant will not have to wait for our staff to make their extension of benefits; simply visit our website, and in the area of subsequent unemployment claim, once you have entered your social security and your number of NIP, will answer questions related to the PEUC, “he said in a press release.
The federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act establishes a temporary benefit program known as Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation (PEUC), which provides up to an additional 13 weeks of benefits for individuals who have exhausted all their rights under unemployment insurance and remain fit and available for work, the more they find themselves active in the job search. Applicants for this program must have exhausted their unemployment insurance benefits.
Follow these steps to complete the benefit extension if you qualify:
1. Visit the website: trabajo.pr.gov
2. Click Online Services
3. Click Claim Subsequent Unemployment Week
4. Enter your social security number and PIN
5. Answer the questions related to the PEUC
6. Answer all the questions of the weeks that have dates
7. Submit your application
“We remind the claimants that this compensation is aimed at anyone who has exhausted their benefits. They have until December 26, 2020 to submit the extension of benefits,” the secretary concluded.
