Before Destiny 2Tomorrow ‘s big annual showcase, Bungie released a 15 – second teaser for the Witch Queen they reveal today that it shows the god Hive Savathûn, a character who poses as the master of deception and deception, walking through a dark lake full of dead Thralls bodies. “The truth is a funny thing,” she says. Players first look at a character who has long been working against them in the story, presented in a dramatic way. The teaser has also once again directed fans towards a huge and mysterious whirlwind of leaks that began circulating earlier this year.

But I will get there in a second. First, a quick taxonomy of apparent Destiny 2 leaks. There was the “Notepad leak”, Which began making the rounds a few days before Season of the Splicer went live in early May. Supposedly it came from the discord server of secret raids where fans exchange rumors and discoveries, along with an image that vindicates the archive dates back to a week before Bungie even revealed season 14. The material included potentially big things, ranging from claims that Osiris was Savathûn and that a new element that would be introduced into the game would be a power with thorns called “steam.”

Much of this leak has been repeatedly shown to be legitimate. It also referred to the new anti-cheating software that came into play. Last week, Bungie confirmed Destiny 2 it would be getting BattlEye anti-cheating support next season. The leak said that season 15 would be called Season of the Lost and will feature Mara Sov, both Bungie recently also confirmed it. Filtration too correctly predicted several upcoming changes to Destiny 2sandbox.

But there are also things that seem less likely to happen. Notepad leak mentions a Hello linked content that would celebrate Bungie’s 30th anniversary as a gaming studio. The fact that this year Destiny 2 showcase occurs the same day that Microsoft’s upcoming Xbox showcase made this particular detail seem even more compelling. Paul Tassi of Forbes, however, recently reported no Hello the crossover is currently under construction.

In July, he leavesPasta leakIt included the notepad leak at the top, as well as a lot of other things, including many more details about the next one. Witch Queen expansion as Savathûn with a dreadnought orbiting Mars similar to the new location of Destination 1‘s Taken king expansion. Some al Destiny 2 the community came to treat Pastebin leak as if it were the full version of notepad leak. Others think it’s just a masterpiece of sorts that brings together a lot of rumors from different sources, and debates about its veracity have fractured the RaidSecrets Destiny subreddit in competing schools of thought. There was one piece of information in particular that was too much for some fans: Savathûn was getting his own ghost.

2015 Taken king expansion, considered by many to be the golden age of early times Destiny, presented the Book of Sorrows, a text similar to the Old Testament that served as the origin story for the hive and specifically that Savathûn and his brothers came from the larvae of the god Worm that were deep within their world of origin called the foundation who lived inside them as symbiotes.

While ghosts come from the traveler (a supposed benevolent alien power) and can revive guardians indefinitely, symbiotes are evil in nature and effectively curse the gods of Hive to give them their most basic instincts in exchange for power. Some Destiny 2 the traditionalists do not see how Savathûn or any other agent of Darkness could get a ghost because they are not deserved. For others, it makes perfect sense Bungie’s recent emphasis on the arches of redemption and build the moral agency of their previously one-dimensional alien races.

How does this relate to today’s teaser? In addition to the Pastebin leak, an independent image is believed to have come from the same source, showed an approximate artistic concept for the Witch Queen expansion depicting Savathûn with a ghost. The image was much easier to set aside until Bungie confirmed today that the leaked depiction of Savathûn, a pointed bone crown and all, is accurate. It would also fit with theories like this one per GameSpotPhil Hornshaw that season of the Splicer it was not a throaty attempt to destroy the last city as much as a prelude for players to team up with Savathûn against other enemies.

Some time ago, Bungie expressed a growing dissatisfaction with him data miners and the game’s strong spoiler culture. The proliferation of leaks that are only real biases makes us wonder if, perhaps, it is an active attempt to keep players a little off base. Misleading “leaks” are not unknown, Respawn he did it last year with Apex Legends sending false details about an upcoming character. Also, Savathûn is supposed to be basically the Destiny Loki of the universe. So when he says that the truth is “a funny thing” in today’s teaser, and that the marketing motto of tomorrow’s event is “survive the truth,” and you have all the ingredients for fans to fall for cap Destiny rabbit hole.

Fortunately we will know soon enough how much of all this is true. Tomorrow Destiny 2 the shop window appears with a pre-show at 11:00 am ET.
