During a continuous play earlier this month, Doom Eternal director Hugo Martin was asked if the team had ever considered developing a female Doom Slayer for the game. His response was surprisingly exhaustive.
“Actually, I thought about it,” Martin told Joshua Boyle, Bethesda’s community manager, after a question from the viewer. “I think if we did, I would be lethal. I think it’s interesting how the death of glory would impact, the kind of weapons it would have, the fighting style. All aggressions, absolutely, but a different kind of aggression. I would really strive to allow it to impact the game in a meaningful way. I’ve definitely thought about it a lot. “
The people behind 2016 Doom and 2020 Doom Eternal they have referred to their main character as a Ferrari, in that interpretation as the Doom Slayer it’s fun at any speed. Martin said they would like to find out similar types of references for any character they develop, including a hypothetical Doom Slayer woman.
“How would that affect things?” Martin added. “What kind of analogies could you draw from it and allow this to influence the experience? It would certainly be great.”
The identity of DoomThe protagonist – formerly known as Doomguy before being reinvented as Doom Slayer alongside the modern, story-oriented reboot – has never had any influence on the action of the first-person shooter. It is simply a ship for the player’s desire to destroy a bunch of demons as brutally as possible. That said, the fact that Martin has seriously considered the development of a female counterpart is quite orderly and it should be interesting to see if these ideas make their way into the future. Doom projects.
