An elected official in New Mexico – who co-founded the Cowboys group for Trump – was arrested Sunday by the FBI over his alleged role in the Capitol Revolt.
Couy Griffin, a commissioner in Otero County, was arrested after being filmed on the steps of the Capitol the day a crowd of Trump supporters attacked the legislative building, federal authorities told KVIA-TV.
At a commissioners’ meeting Thursday, Griffin vowed to return to Washington, DC on the opening day, armed with weapons to “embrace” the Second Amendment, the media reported separately.
According to the report, Griffin had called the siege of the Capitol “a great day for America.”
“People have shown that they have had enough. People are prepared for legal and fair elections, or so you will get. You will get more, ”he said from the Capitol on January 6.
Griffin had said he did not cause harm or assault anyone on the day of the riot.
The New Mexico Attorney General asked Griffin to resign on Sunday evening.
“I demand that Couy Griffin resign immediately from the Otero County Commission or that my office request his removal,” Attorney General Hector Balderas said. wrote on Twitter.
It was not immediately clear what charges Griffin will face.
His group, Cowboys for Trump, supports the president “and his policies Make America Great Again,” according to his website.
