The FBI and the Utah State Bureau of Investigation were asked to help investigate the murder of two newly married women in the state, Fox 13 in Salt Lake City reported.
The Grand County Sheriff’s Office has asked the two agencies to join in the investigation into the deaths of Kylen Schulte, 24, and Crystal Turner, 38, who went missing on Aug. 14. for the first time and they found dead shots at their campsite four days later. .
Sheriff Steven White says this is the largest investigation his office has ever undertaken.
“We just need to know that everything we can do is being done, so we’ve asked for additional resources. We want to make sure we do it thoroughly. We do it completely and we do it well,” White said, according to Fox 13.
“We have additional patrols that work pretty much all over the county and we’re putting special emphasis on the mountain and around these areas. We’re trying to work on them as much as we can, especially when we have eight guys off,” he added.
The Hill has contacted the FBI for comment.
Shortly before finding the couple, Schulte’s father posted on Facebook that they had reported “a strange camp near them” and that they felt threatened, according to USA Today.
“Kylen and Crystal told their close friends that there was a strange camp near them that was scaring them !!! And that they should change campsite. Now they have been missing for over 4 days and nights!” Sean-Paul Schulte published on Wednesday.
Friends and family of the couple told Fox 13 that they are devastated at not knowing what happened to them, but hope to find answers.
“It’s hard to know that we can’t understand anything and we can’t find these people who did this to them,” said Brittany Garcia, a close friend of Schulte and Turner.
Other friends expressed concern about the transparency of the investigation.
“There’s a lot of curiosity in the city as to whether law enforcement is doing everything they can and whether they did everything they could in the beginning,” Laura Lee Green told reporters.
White says his office acted when the missing report was initially filed.
“In fact, there were deputies going to the mountain areas, there was actually a Colorado sheriff looking at us from one of the lakes at the back of the mountain,” he said.
White said the investigation is ongoing, but will not be able to share all the details to protect the integrity of the case.
“Right now, we’re not taking anything off the table,” White said. “We are investigating this in every possible way for all possible things.”
