The first state in California to exceed 2 million cases of COVID-19

California surpassed 2 million cases of COVID-19 Thursday morning, by Johns Hopkins University.

Why it’s important: It is the first US state to have more than 2 million coronavirus infections. Although it took California more than nine months to get a million people to test positive for the virus, state health officials have confirmed 1 million cases in six weeks, Mercury News notes.

The big picture: Intensive care units in California are overcrowded, especially in the south and San Joaquin Valley, which have 0% capacity.

  • More than 23,500 people have lost their lives due to coronavirus in California and the test positivity rate stands at 6.45%, according to JHU.

For the record: The milestone in the cases comes when the first doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine are being rolled out across the United States, with more than a million Americans received so far.
