A full set of the first edition of the original 1999 Pokémon cards has recently been sold for a staggering $ 666,000. This collection is one of the best-selling in the history of the trading card business and serves as a new benchmark for the ever-growing sales that are taking place in the Pokemon space over the past year. .
The sale itself transpired through Goldin Auctions and contained not only all the letters from the 1st edition of the original set, but all were classified in the “Gem Mint” condition. If you have no idea what this means, it’s essentially the highest level possible when it comes to Pokémon cards with the designation “Mint” that fall just below. While the differences between the two rating levels aren’t wide on paper, the Gem Mint rating can end up generating thousands of dollars more in a possible sale.
Probably the jewel in the crown of the collection appeared in the form of a unique Charizard card from the 1st edition. In the past, this card alone has sold for hundreds of thousands. So that it could be included with this larger collection, it only made the whole set much more valuable.
Pokemon cards in general have drastically increased in price over the last year or so. Part of this has been due, in part, to a general resurgence of interest from longtime fans who want to acquire some of the cards they had as children. However, those who have money to exploit, that is, content creators, have gone crazy in recent months and have given an even greater light to the scene. Just last week, YouTuber Logan Paul revealed that he had spent a whopping $ 2 million on Pokémon cards, which for sure is one thing.
It remains to be seen if this bubble of Pokémon cards will end up appearing or if prices will only continue to rise. At this current rate, however, it does not appear that these original letters from the 1st edition will lose their value any time soon.
