Roy’s “old saying” apparently comes from a controversial lyrics to a 2003 Toby Keith song.
“Take all the Texas rope, find a tall oak, round all the bad guys, hang them on the street for all the people to see,” the song says.
Roy later responded to circulating complaints about his reference to lynching.
“It seems like some people are freaking out that I used an old expression about finding all the rope in Texas and a tall oak about how to do justice to the bad guys. I meant it,” Roy said.
“We need more justice and less police. We need to stop the bad guys, such as those who attacked Atlanta this week, or the cartels who abused young children or those who kill our cops on the street. During the last session of Congress, the House passed the Emmett Till Antiminchant Act, which would have turned lynching into a federal hate crime. Roy voted in favor of the bill, which eventually faded in the Senate.
