The development comes after Colorado officials announced on Tuesday the first confirmed case in the U.S. of the new variant, which was first identified in the UK.

Officials said at a news conference Wednesday that the case of the new variant in California is a man in his thirties in San Diego County with no travel history, again indicating that the variant is extending to some extent to the community. The man is not admitted to the hospital and contacts are being tracked. There was family contact, officials said.
“Because there is no history of travel, we believe this is not an isolated case in San Diego County,” said Nathan Fletcher, the county supervisor.
Fauci said in the conversation with Newsom that the new case is not a surprise and that he hopes that additional cases of the new variant will be reported soon in other states as well.
“I’m not surprised you have a case and there are probably more cases in California, and we’ll probably see reports from other states,” he said.
Fauci offered the assurance that while the new variant appears to be more transmissible, it does not appear to cause more serious diseases or evade vaccine protection.
“There is no indication that virulence is increasing,” Fauci said, noting that National Institutes of Health and other laboratories are studying it closely for more information.
The announcement comes as Southern California has been particularly hit by the virus and hospitals there are facing enormous stress.
Health officials urge people to take the same precautions against the new variant of the virus, including masks, avoid indoor meetings with other households, keep their distance and wash their hands.
