Toshiba says production of PS5 and Xbox units may be struggling due to a shortage of materials
According to an update from Japanese manufacturer Toshiba, delays in production of PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X consoles can be extended until 2023.
Microsoft and Sony are among a handful of companies still affected by the shortage of materials needed to produce semiconductors, which will last at least a year.
“The supply of chips will remain very tight until at least September of next year,” said Takeshi Kamebuchi, Toshiba’s managing director of semiconductors. “In some cases, there may be customers who are not fully served by 2023.”
According to Bloomberg, the company plans to invest 60 60 billion ($ 545 million) in support for semiconductor production over the next three years. Toshiba may also consider building another factory to meet demand.
Kamebuchi also acknowledged that “gaming console manufacturers are among the customers who make the most demands and I sincerely feel their frustration, as none of them have 100% satisfaction.”
Earlier this year, Microsoft, Google and Apple formed a pressure group with the goal of promoting semiconductor manufacturing in the U.S. and resolving shortages. Other companies involved are Amazon Web Services, Intel Corp., Hewlett Packard and more.
