The latest leak of Google Pixel 6 removes the power curtain from the Tensor chip

Following the recent leak of information about Google Pixel 6, the latest leak is duplicated in claims regarding the configuration of the Google Tensor chip.

XDA-Developers claims from a source that the next Tensor chip will have a 2x2x4 configuration. It will likely consist of two “prime” Cortex-X1 cores, two A76 cores and four high-efficiency A55 cores.

This differs from other Samsung and Qualcomm chips, such as the Snapdragon 888, which features a 1x3x4 design consisting of a single X1 core, three A78 cores, and the same high-efficiency cores.

The Cortex-X1 debuted in 2020, claiming a considerable increase in performance over previous “big” cores. This would suggest that the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro could be a challenge for the best Android phones, and at least it’s a little more than we expected from Google’s first internal chip. However, as XDA points out, including the old A76 chips instead of the new A78 chips is confusing.

Since the new A78 cores have improved performance and take up less area, it would make sense for Google to use the newer cores. However, given the state of global chip shortages, Google may think it’s best to play it safe using older cores, while offsetting lower efficiency through AI. That said, it’s not clear to what extent Google plans to make the best use of these older cores.

Still, it’s an interesting case for Google’s SoC debut on its next flagship phone. XDA points out that they don’t have the full picture of the new chip yet, so we may have to wait and see how the device is expected to work closer to or after its full release this fall.

Additional specifications for the Tensor chip include support for aptX, aptX HD and LDAC codecs, hardware-accelerated AV1 decoding, and a Mali-G78 GPU, which is also found on the Galaxy S21. Unfortunately, XDA has not found any support for video output.
