Possessed witches, talking crystals and wrong missions …Destiny 2The season of the lost has it all. After a short respite towards the end of the splicer season, I plunged back into the deep end of the Bungie booty shooter with the unofficial start of the fifth year. And there is much to love and even more to mumble. As always, but there are many fascinating and moving parts to break down Destiny 2 it is heading towards its next ambitious evolution.
The cast of the game has never been so varied or concrete, and the stakes for them that feature old enemies and new revelations have never been higher. Players return to the City of Dreams, a source of so much joy, magic and mystery Destiny 2 high. And there are many more nodes to upgrade, loot to unlock, and mission bars to fill. My initial time with the new update hasn’t surprised me like some past, but I also suspect that the best parts of what it offers may be hiding in the coming weeks and months.
The fate of Osiris was revealed
The season of the lost runs out the door with a mission that allows you to search for the missing Warlock Osiris in the city of dreams, the local dazzling Tolkien first introduced in the 2018 Forsaken expansion. Saint-14, the lover of Osiris, follows, like The Crow, the bad emo boy from Forsaken turned into a good Samaritan amnesiac after being resurrected by space magic. You shoot a lot of Hive and finally follow Osiris to a secret room on the other side of the ascending plane, where the queen of the awakened and the crow’s sister, Mara Sov, also return from Forsaken. . Then Osiris drops the bomb: he has actually been the god Hive Savathûn all last year.
It’s the kind of reward I was hoping to end with Season of the Splicer, but it’s no less effective here. Savathûn has Osiris hidden and you have to help her free her from a magic spell cast by her sister that locks her in a giant crystal obelisk. He also sees her the excellent Debra Wilson. Although Mara Sov and her lieutenants are the main providers of the search this season, I anticipate many cryptic exchanges with the rock god Hive in the coming weeks, and I am motivated by that.

Astral alignment does not always align
I’m less overwhelmed by the possibility of continuing to wear the new centerpiece of the loss season – an activity done in light of six players called Astral Alignment. Like almost any other seasonal mode in recent years, you teleport through a handful of different environments, slashing enemies, filling meters of progress, and listening to the occasional orb to knock down the shields of the mini-bosses.
Okay … when it works. The Lost season has kicked off with a few mistakes (which seems more and more common with the game these days) that can slow down progress. Twice I had to go back to the main launcher and restart it from scratch because the spheres they were supposed to generate to drop the enemy shields never came. The first time, my group came across the problem in the middle. The second time, they dropped me in the purgatory of another group after their players made bail. It took me a few minutes to do anything to realize what was going on.
Since then, Bungie has disabled the appearance of matches in those problematic situations, but it is not the only problem of astral alignment. The rewards for completing the activity also take a long time to leave. And in one of the half-dozen races I’ve done so far, they’ve never done it. It was a nuisance, especially because you need to open the single brush at the end of the mission to complete the powerful gear weekly challenge. Wayfinder’s Troves makes me bleed
While we’re dealing with treasure chests, I’m also not a fan of the new secondary currency needed to open them. Astral Alignment has two chests at the end. The first thing that opens and makes you fall into the family world. The second requires 150 parallel paths (never change Destiny) to open up and offer you the new season of lost gear, also the things you really want. The last few seasons have had a similar mechanic, but they haven’t required as much of the seasonal currency or the currency itself to open the chest as to upgrade your main seasonal center. It’s a problem when new content falls through and you want to play and win the news, but you find yourself sidelined because you’ve emptied your pockets and lost a dollar.
If all this sounds extremely granular and demanding, it is. It’s also the classic type Destiny shit I have less patience for the more repetitive and stretched seasons, even if for completely understandable reasons. On a positive note, astral alignment is the most attractive seasonal activity since the sunrise season. I preferred the most organically integrated open area modes in the world, such as the Season of Arriva’s Contact public event. But the Dreaming City remains Destiny 2 the most beautiful sandbox and, for all my current catches, its stunning views still make me want to go back for more.
Welcome to the Shattered Realm
The other big addition to the Lost season is Shattered Realm. Like the Season of the Splicer’s Expunge missions, expeditions to this new part of the Ascending Plan involve some light platforms, some enemy troops, and a head-to-head fight at the end. Although linear at first, the Wayfinder compass update unlocks new areas and ways to interact with the glyphs you find there. This makes exploration much freer than Expunge missions. but so far it has been a great hassle to unlock the tools needed to get the most out of it.
There are some fresh visual blooms like an abandoned church and stone Gothic ruins, but being on the ascending plane, it is also surrounded by darkness. It looks promising so far, and I’m sure the best fashion tricks will come in future weekly rotations. For now, the time-investing relationship with the loot makes the subsequent races seem a bit cumbersome.
The new Stasis weapons punch
What else can the season of the lost offer? So far, two new exotic weapons. The first is the Lorentz Driver. It looks like the Graviton spear in linear fusion rifle transforms enemies into energy spots it explodes, and it’s a lot of fun.
I spent a particularly tense lost sector career melting through the waves of Taken with it and had fun. All Destiny 2The recent seasonal exotics have been ready, and Lorentz Driver is no different.
The scepter of Ager is another story, though I don’t have it yet because it’s part of an extensive line of exotic search. The first step in acquiring weapons requires activating and collecting artifacts in the Dream City patrol area, and any reason to get involved is fine.
There are also four new legendary weapons that fall with elemental Stasis properties. For now, what I liked most is the Vulpecula precision handgun. It’s complete, but it also offers some really fun new perks, such as the return to Shoot To Loot. Insert a bullet through a heavy pack of ammunition on the other side of the arena, it will not only collect it, but also load your other weapons.
A big patch brings other changes
Many of the most important changes to Season of the Lost occur at the system level. Balance changes have made subclasses, like the Warlock Voidwalker, fun and powerful to handle again. Now the primary weapons have infinite ammunition. Fans of certain exotics have led to incredibly outdated new constructions, at least in the short term. Also, the crossover game is finally real and players celebrate by forming cross-platform conga lines.
There is additional content later. Bungie dramatically reworked Trials of Osiris with a solo queuing and reputable vendor system that will make it much easier (and hopefully more fun) to grow your unique team. The new anti-cheating software should also help solve some competitive mode issues. But this will not be published until the second week of September.
Iron Banner will also return sometime with new weapons and armor, an update that had long been expected. And players have the annual Winter Solstice and Halloween events to look forward to, not to mention Bungie’s own 30-year-old package that will add more unique gear and a new dungeon when it arrives in December as a mid-season pickup.
The long wait Witch Queen
And Season of the Lost will need it. With Witch Queen already delayed to February 2022, season 15 will be one of the longest in the game, with about six months. On the back of Bungie’s annual Destiny 2 showcase, which outlined some great exciting changes coming next year such as new maps and reworked subclasses (Voidwalkers will soon be able to summon black holes that offer life to enemies), right now there is a lot of publicity in the community.
But my first week with Season of the Lost has brought me back to Earth a bit. It is not the normal annual expansion that players have become accustomed to receiving at this time of year. And according to the new cadence set by Bungie Destiny 2 in the last two years, it will be a real slow burn. I don’t see myself grinding it as obsessively as I did playing Season of the Splicer (probably my favorite season in history), but what may end up lacking loot and gameplay seems to be well positioned to make up for it with rhythms of great history. The Crow’s collision with his past misdeeds has been underway since the Forsaken star in late 2018 revealed he was back to life and I’m more than happy to embark on my fourth tour of the city of dreams to see how everything unfolds.
