The mayor of Blasio declares March 14 the day of remembrance of COVID-19

March 14 will be COVID-19 Remembrance Day in New York City, Mayor Bill de Blasio said Thursday.

The city reported its first coronavirus death on March 14, 2020 and the event will recognize all the people who died due to the mistake since then.

The city’s Department of Health reports that 25,099 deaths at the Big Apple are related to COVID-19.

Of this total, 20,295 deaths from the virus were confirmed, while 4,804 deaths were considered “probable” cases of COVID-19.

De Blasio said residents of “all backgrounds” were affected, but noted that the disease especially affected the city’s poorest minority neighborhoods.

“So many that we lost victims of disparities … victims of too much racism,” the mayor said during his year-end press session.
