The mayor of San Antonio reports 21 new deaths by COVID-19

SAINT ANTHONY – San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg reported 21 new deaths from COVID-19 (4,017 in total) during Thursday’s briefing in the city and county.

On Tuesday, 953 new cases of COVID-19 were reported, with a 7-day average of 983 cases.

Nirenberg said there are 1,159 patients in the hospital, 25 of whom are children. There are 260 patients with ventilators and 365 in the intensive care unit.

The mayor said the figures seem to be heading in the right direction.

Vaccines in Bexar County

Nirenberg said 1.4 million people have received their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine and 1.1 million people are fully vaccinated in Bexar County.

The city council voted Thursday morning 9-1 to approve $ 1 million in grants to spend on up to 10,000 gift cards that will be handed out to people who complete their series of vaccinations at Metro Health vaccination sites.

Variant of Mu

Claude Jacob, director of Metro Health, said the city has not confirmed any case of the Mu COVID-19 variant. He said there is sometimes a delay in the data, so Metro Health will report new cases as that data becomes available.

On Monday, KSAT’s sister station, KPRC 2, reported that there were at least 50 patients who had the Mu variant at a Houston hospital.
