The Mets incorporate Kevin Pillar into free agency MLB

The Mets made a new upgrade of their home field, agreeing on Monday a one-year contract with free agent Kevin Pillar, confirmed Mike Puma of The Post.

The exact terms of the agreement were not immediately known.

The 32-year-old gives the Mets a third chance at center, along with Brandon Nimmo and minor league signing Albert Almora Jr. It can also provide some flexibility in the left field, where Dom Smith will probably start.

Pilar, who hit right, bounced back after seven seasons with the Blue Jays. He hit .308 with two homers, 13 RBI and a .801 OPS in 24 games to close out 2020 with the Rockies. Pillar started last season with the Red Sox, for whom he scored .274 in 30 games.

The Mets, who missed center-half free agent George Springer, have been looking to improve their field outside this season. Although Pillar has played mainly in the center, he is not the same player as before in his career. But he could also serve as Smith’s defensive replacement on the left. It could also start against leftists, against whom it has a diagonal line of .298 / .332 / .538 in the last two years.
