The Modern COVID vaccine inflates cosmetic facial fillings in some

An advisory committee of the Food and Drug Administration has noted that people with cosmetic facial fillers could experience side effects from Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine.

Several participants in the trial with facial fillings suffered inflammation and swelling after receiving the vaccine. A dermatologist in the Los Angeles area said the reactions were caused by a dysfunction of the immune system.

Facial fillings help to smooth wrinkles and improve cheeks and lips.

“Your immune system that causes inflammation increases when you get a vaccine, that’s how it should work,” Dr. Shirley Chi told ABC7 in a report Thursday. “So it makes sense that you see an immune response in certain areas where they see some substance that is not a natural substance in your body.”

Chi said the side effects were easily treated by medical staff and they should not stop people from getting the vaccine.

“In these cases, all patients had swelling and inflammation in the area where the filling was administered,” Chi said. “A couple of patients had cheek filling six months before the vaccine and one patient had a lip filling two days after the vaccine. They were all treated with steroids and antihistamines and all their reactions were resolved.”

On December 18, Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine was the second drug to obtain emergency use authorization from the FDA. Pfizer and BioNTech combined to produce a December 11 approved vaccine.

The Moderna vaccine does not need to be stored at freezing temperatures, so it is easier to store than the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine.
