MI over the weekend spoke to the 36-year-old footballer, who explained to us his short- and medium-term plans for his career. The World Cup winner with Honduras in South Africa 2010 and Brazil 2014 is already beginning to prepare his new generation in football. Their twins Jarden and José inherited their father’s talent, and Boniek himself polishes them from an early age.

This will be your tenth season in MLS, what does that mean for you?
Thank God I was presented with an opportunity to continue on the team, I am so happy that the doors have been opened for me. We are already in preseason and focused on everything that comes our way.
What has been the key to staying so long abroad?
First of all I would say that discipline, in maintaining a good physique, being in a family, breaks that are vital to not losing shape. In the end each of the actions you do are key to playing at the best level always.
For Boniek, what does the Houston Dynamo represent?
It means a lot, it’s my home, it’s been 10 years here, the club that gave me the opportunity to go abroad. I owe them a lot, I am delighted with everything I have achieved.
Could this be your last season on MLS?
Well the idea is to keep playing, I go year after year. I hope to play a lot, the team has hired good players, there is good competition, but I will continue to work to win the title. Age does not weigh me down to play, here is Maynor Figueroa with 37, in Honduras Javier Portillo, I think as long as he follows me there is Boniek for a while. There will be a time when the body will tell you no more, but for now we are fine.

It’s a league that has grown, here you play the tu for you as they say. Not only do they bring in great players, in everything they are evolving, the infrastructure, I think MLS is looking to give the fight to the Mexican League. Which way is MLS heading in a few years?
To become the best league in the world, this is the path that managers are charting, they will have the World Cup in 2026, they are certainly looking to compete at the highest level.
Did you have more options to sign up for, or was only the Houston Dynamo the priority?
The truth is that I did have other offers, from MLS only Houston. From USL there was an opportunity, but I decided to stay with the club for the new project they have, where I am still important in the nursery and that in the end is good, they value you.

Are you planning to retire to Dynamo or do you want to return to Honduras?
God willing I would like to retire here (Houston), the family is very comfortable in the United States, but if not given we will look for other options. Let’s go step by step to see how the results will be given at the end of the season.
Do you plan to stay in the United States?
The idea is this. My children study here (Boniek Josep, Jaden Boniek, Ivania Lourdes) I am trying to give the best to them in the future, so I plan to stay and live here.
So far how do you rate your career at 36?
It has been very good, quite positive, with ups and downs as is normal in this race, but that is not over yet and we must continue to enjoy every game and training.
How do you enjoy life in Houston?
I live my life very quietly, there are many Central Americans here, nothing out of the ordinary, there are many Honduran restaurants, there is variety, we have a great time as they say “.

I walk into my house, watching TV. With the kids when it’s not my turn to train we get to play Fifa, playing cards, my wife also gets to play with us, with some app games too, but I enjoy all the time with them.
How would you like fans to remember you?

Is Boniek good in the kitchen?
Before not playing professionally, I defended myself in the kitchen, but I know that if I get back in full force, I defend myself, at least the water doesn’t burn me … ha, ha, ha.
Is Boniek an affectionate father?
I’m a very homely and affectionate guy with my kids, obviously there are times when you have to push them to do their homework, I play a lot with them and I’m always helping them in whatever way I can.
How husband is romantic and retail?
This I should already ask my wife Ivania Reis, I am a retailer with her for the occasions, but it is better for her to tell you.
If you had to describe him as a person, what would you say?
I would say that I am a very cheerful person, who always helps others when I have the opportunity to do so, first class worker, that is how I would define myself.
Do your twins, Jaden and Josep, have a future in football?
Being honest I look at the future, they have details that are important on the tracks, they are both seven years old. Boniek Josep is a striker and has many qualities. Jaden is defensive and is strong, he scores well. Right now they’re going to go into a football academy and I’m going to go in too to help them with teaching.
So are you going to venture into starting your career as a coach?
This is the idea, to acquire knowledge from now on, I will start with the children, a friend gave me the opportunity at his academy and I said yes, and in my free time we will take advantage. There is a lot of opportunity here to start the coaching career, it starts with something and we will see what happens and in the future this opportunity can be given.
Has Boniek been a person who likes luxuries?
No, none of that, I’m normal, I don’t mind luxurious things. This is for other types of people.

I have many, the truth; first Chelato Uclés because it marked my career. Then I would put you in Joan Carles Espinoza and then in Nahúm Espinoza. With the Selection, Reinaldo Rueda and Luis Suárez. I have few goals, but when I score goals, it would be difficult, but my first goal with Olimpia against Real Spain was a goal, with that I would stay. There are other good ones, but this one is very special to me. “
Why does it cost so much now that Honduras exports players abroad?
There are several players abroad, what happens is that they don’t come out as often as before or heavier teams. But it’s also part of some things that aren’t being done right.
Do you want to remain part of the process towards Qatar 2022?
That’s the idea, I think if I stay active I can be called up. We know there’s a lot of competition, but that’s good because there’s a very committed group. I will always be ready for my country. There is a good litter of players, this year it is key to know if we will have options to qualify for the World Cup.
Do you dream of being in another World Cup?
Sure, I’m with that big desire, but we know it’s not easy, first I have to keep playing to get the chance, trust God it can be given.
How should Honduran football improve?
On the courts, it is key so that we can develop the players who are growing, otherwise it will always be difficult for us to go to the World Cup in any category.
