the Puerto Rico National Guard has arrived today on the island municipality of Vieques to remove and transport tires, in compliance with the Executive Order signed by Governor Pedro Pierluisi Urrutia to address the proliferation of used tires on the island.
“Certainly the process of collecting tires throughout Puerto Rico has been full of challenges; but thanks to the commitment and dedication of our citizen-soldiers and aviators we are fully fulfilling this mission and arriving today in Vieques is an example that we continue to focus on this effort. Today we collected about 7,000 tires on Girl Island, “said GNPR Assistant General José J. Reis.
The Department of Natural and Environmental Resources has identified over 1,600 gomeras in Puerto Rico of which they have already impacted over 320, for a total of approximately 800,000 tires collected as of August 24, 2021. The mission has been completed in 10 municipalities and continues in 38 municipalities simultaneously.
We recommend:
“Our staff has responsibly taken on this mission recognizing the positive impact on the health of our people and improving the quality of life of all sectors,” Reis said. “This mission is not unique to the National Guard of Puerto Rico, it is a responsibility that also includes municipalities, gomeras and private enterprise.”
The GNPR will continue this mission until September 30, the date on which Executive Order 2021-055 concludes declaring an environmental emergency on the island and activating the National Guard in support of the DNA in the collection of tires and transport to the centers established recycling.
