LAUDERDALE-BY-THE-SEA, Fla. – A naval mine landed in Broward County where many people usually go to relax on the beach.
An ongoing investigation is underway and a response team has been activated.
All of this happened on Lauderdale-by-the-Sea beach on Pine Avenue.
A section of the beach was engraved by Broward’s sheriff’s office.
According to BSO, a patrol deputy discovered the “possible military explosive training device” at approximately 2:30 a.m. Sunday.
Naval mines are used in the ocean as an explosive engine to damage surface displacements or submarines.
It looked like the word “inert” was written in the mine, which means it could be a “fictitious” mine that was used in training, but that doesn’t rule out that it may be active.
BSO contacted the U.S. Air Force and responded to examine the mine, and a squad of BSO bombs was also called in to look at it.
Officials finally secured and removed the mine. He will be placed in the custody of the Air Force for further examination and investigation.
