The Netherlands announces five-week confinement

A five-week confinement will take effect this week in the Netherlands to try to limit the expansion of Covid-19, Prime Minister Mark Rutte announced on Monday

“Holland closes for five weeks,” Rutte said in a televised address from government headquarters in The Hague, in front of which there were protesters.

Rutte said the measure was necessary to tackle the coronavirus outbreak.

“We are not facing a simple flu as many people think,” he added, referring to protesters in front of the government headquarters.

The population is told they must be in their homes and can only have two guests a day, Rutte said.

Added that the measure will be applied until January 19.

All your agendas, even essential concepts like supermarkets, food agendas and graces should be closed from Tuesday, and the chosen ones will close from Wednesday, added.

Museums, zoos, movie theaters and gyms will also close, Rutte said.
