In a new report, the Wall Street Journal has revealed that two small, but critical, manufacturers of iPhone components are suffering from serious production problems that “threaten” to affect the supply of the iPhone 13 weeks after launch.
The WSJ explains that the suppliers, Murata Manufacturing and Taiyo Yuden, co-manufacture multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs), small pieces of ceramic that are used to control the flow of electricity within a device. More than 1,000 MLCCs are needed in an average smartphone.
Both providers have been affected by a wave of Covid-19 infections across East Asia. Taiyo Yuden has been forced to operate without 40% of its employees, while Murata, the world’s largest manufacturer of MLCC (responsible for 40% of MLCC’s global supply), has had to close. The Philippine-based company has seen tripled cases in the country over the past 6 weeks.
The above news offer warnings from Apple itself. In July, Apple Chief Financial Officer Luca Maestri said: “We expect supply constraints during the September quarter to be higher than we experienced during the June quarter. The restrictions will mainly affect the iPhone and the iPhone. ‘iPad’.

And the challenges grow. Last month TSMC, Apple’s largest chip maker, announced a significant increase in component pricing, which analysts warn could lead to last-minute price hikes on the iPhone 13. Just two weeks earlier, it was understood that Apple decided not to raise prices. On the other hand, recent leaks from the iPhone 13 launch date suggest that Apple could launch the phones within two weeks. So we won’t have to wait long to see if Tim Cook has decided to swallow the extra costs.
In addition, for those who are committed to improving profits it will be important. Several leaks have revealed that the new iPhone 13 range will come with new massive rear cameras, larger batteries, faster charging, next-generation WiFi and a smaller notch. IPhone 13 Pro buyers will also benefit from globally updated, 120Hz, upgraded ProMotion 5G, 120Hz screens.
But beware, the shortage of chips has already seen climbers send console prices to the skies. IPhone fans who miss the initial batch of iPhone 13 models are likely to face similar exploitative sales tactics. So, if you plan to upgrade it, be prepared to act quickly.
