They have been images that supposedly represent a third-generation Apple Pencil shared on Twitter by the leaker known as “Mr. White. “
The supposed new Apple Pencil seems to share a design very similar to the current second-generation AppleApencil, which is shorter than the previous version and is inductively charged next to an iPad.
The updated Apple Pencil looks like it has a glossy finish, very similar to that used in first-generation Apple Pencil or AirPods, rather than the matte white finish of the second version of the accessory.
The other notable difference is the tip of the “Apple pencil.” The first- and second-generation “Apple pencils” have small screw-on tips that can be easily replaced when worn out. This updated model seems to have a considerably larger tip component, with a much longer section that is screwed into the Apple Pencil itself. It’s unclear why a new version of the “Apple Pencil” may have a redesigned board, but it’s likely indicative of internal design changes.
The redesigned head may indicate that new functionality will arrive at the tip of the “Apple pencil”. In July last year, Apple applied for a patent on a “Apple Pencil” board that would allow the device to test real-world colors using a color sensor, so it is clear that Apple is interested in expanding the utility of your iPad stylus.
In short, the image suggests that updates to the new “Apple Pencil” could be more focused on the internal parts of the accessory than any significant external design change. However, it is not reasonable to expect any additional functionality on the current model to justify a new iteration of the device.
“Mr. White” has previously leaked correct images of the iPad mini 5, the rear glass of the iPhone Graphite 12 Pro, the screen of the iPhone 12 mini, and the components of the A14 chip. Other leaks, such as a braided Lightning cable and an Apple Pencil color option, have yet to appear, but overall, “Mr. White” seems to have a reliable track record.
It’s also important to keep in mind that new iPad Pro models are expected to arrive this month, so the timing of this leak may add to its reliability. The new iPad Pro models are expected to include updated A-Series chips and mini-LED displays, all with virtually unchanged design.
