The new magic keyboard provides Touch ID to all Mac M1s

Apple’s recently announced Magic Keyboard for Mac, which comes equipped with a Touch ID sensor, is compatible with all MacOS machines that have an M1 chip. At the moment, it is only available with iMac.

Launched Tuesday alongside a revamped 24-inch iMac, the Magic Keyboard is Apple’s first wireless Mac peripheral that incorporates Touch ID authentication to sign in to macOS, purchase items with Apple Pay, interact with third-party apps, and far more.

As the blogger pointed out Rene Ritchie, the keyboard can be used by other Mac M1s, enabling Touch ID security for the Mac mini and expanding the capabilities of the 13-inch MacBook Air and MacBook Pro. While both Apple Silicon laptop models have Touch ID built into their respective power buttons, there has yet to be a comparable replacement for the flip mode feature.

It should be noted that the implementation is related to the secure locking of M1, i.e. Magic Keyboard will work like a normal Bluetooth keyboard when connected to an Intel Mac or PC.

Magic Keyboard is currently restricted to the new 24-inch iMac, though that could change in the future, as Apple typically expands the availability of its peripherals. As it stands, iMac shoppers can choose from three different magic keyboard options, including a model with a numeric keypad and a standard version without Touch ID.
