The New York Times announced Friday afternoon that he would return a Peabody Award he won in 2018 for his podcast “Caliphate.” NYT star reporter Rukmini Callimachi’s podcast has had a shameful downfall that has culminated in an internal investigation into its production and reporting process that was released Friday morning. The report said the podcast “did not meet the standards of Times journalism” after it was revealed that the crux of the story was based on the lies the main character in the podcast told about his imagined time in ISIS.
As a result, Callimachi will be eliminated from the onslaught of terrorism. The NYT also said it would return its Peabody it received for the podcast. The Peabody organization issued a statement of acceptance of the NYT proposal. “The Peabody organization was informed today that the New York Times will return its 2018 Peabody Award for the Caliphate podcast,” the statement said. “As a standard for quality media, the integrity of the Peabody Award is paramount and we thank the professional for the way the Times has handled this matter,” Drs. Jeffrey P. Jones, executive director of the organization in a statement, “We will receive the return of the award, recognizing the mutual respect that both organizations have for their journalistic integrity record experience.” The Overseas Press Club also terminated its 2018 podcast award on Friday, tweeting that the club made the decision “Taking note of the findings of the New York Times internal review.”
