The next low-cost iPad is said to feature a thinner, lighter design

The low-cost ninth-generation iPad that Apple is expected to release in 2021 will feature a design based on the third-generation iPad Air that Apple introduced in 2019, it reports. Mac Otakara, citing Chinese sources in the supply chain.

The screen size is expected to equal 10.2 inches, but it will be “significantly thinner” at 6.3 mm. The current eighth-generation ‌iPad‌ is 7.5mm thick, so a 6.3mm chassis would mark a significant design change. It is also expected to be lighter by 460 grams compared to the current weight of 490 grams.

Mac Otakara says the device will continue to have a Touch ID home button and a Lightning port, with which Apple declines the transition to USB-C. It is expected to have a full lamination screen, anti-reflective coating, P3 wide color backing and True Tone.

In addition to the ninth-generation iPad, Mac Otakara has some details on the new generation iPad Pro models. Mac Otakara says the next update won’t see changes in screen size or housing, but the performance of the Series A chip could be “significantly improved.”

Mac Otakara not to mention the rumored 12.9-inch iPad Pro model that is expected to have a mini-LED display, suggesting that it may be a high-end standalone model that sells alongside updatediPad Pro‌ updated models that receive an upgrade more standard.
