Ocasio-Cortez began fundraising Thursday after freezing temperatures took over Texas and left millions without energy or clean water. Its press secretary, Ivet Contreras, confirmed to CNN that nearly $ 5 million had been raised on Sunday evening.
CNN noted that this is the first major fundraising and site visit to the Ocasio-Cortez disaster site, aside from efforts related to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
“Our first big relief effort was last year, when COVID hit, so we were able to build a disaster relief and fundraising operation and cut our teeth with COVID, but in our home district, and that’s why we had previously mobilized for the relief of Hurricane Maria, but that was before he was elected to Congress, ”Ocasio-Cortez told CNN. “I think that’s just something we should be able to do whenever there’s an area in our country that needs it.”
Houston Public Media reported that the funds raised by Ocasio-Cortez will go to Houston Food Bank, Family Eldercare, Feeding Texas, the Bridge Homeless Recovery Center and Corazon Ministries, among others.
The congresswoman visited Texas Saturday, helping distribute food at the Houston Food Bank and visiting a home affected by the winter storm, CNN reported.
“It’s one thing to read about what’s going on, but it’s another to see the damage completely to ourselves,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “The message in Washington is that we don’t let people get caught up in a lot of paperwork. We try to get that help as much as people need it and as quickly as possible.”
Dozens of jeans have died due to harsh conditions caused by falling temperatures. Texas ’electrical infrastructure, which is largely separate from the rest of the country, has been criticized. On Sunday, a family filed a lawsuit against Texas grid operator Electric Reliability Council of Texas, alleging that gross negligence resulted in the death of its 11-year-old son.
