Animal Crossing, the game that really launched Nintendo’s increasingly popular video game franchise on GameCube in 2001, could find itself earning a spot in The Strong Museum’s World Video Game Hall of Fame.
The Strong is a New York-based museum that “houses the world’s largest and most complete collection of game-related historical materials,” which includes a wealth of toys and video games. For a title to be accepted into the museum’s Hall of Fame, it must have “enjoyed popularity for a sustained period and exerted influence in the video game industry or in popular culture and society at large.”
For 2021, a total of twelve games have been classified as possible candidates for induction into the Hall of Fame:
– No animals
– Call of Duty
– FarmVille
– FIFA International Football
– Guitar hero
– Mattel Football
– Microsoft flight simulator
– First position
– Portal
– StarCraft
– Tron
– Where is the world Carmen Sandiego?
Here’s what The Strong says about Animal Crossing:
“Nintendo No animals debuted in 2001 and found massive appeal with its open social simulation and quiet gameplay. Players took on the role of a human being settling in a village full of anthropomorphic animals. The game had no specific purpose, giving players the freedom to complete activities and collect objects as they liked. The smoother game was a hit for both casual and advanced gamers, and spawned numerous sequels.
The latest installment of the game for Nintendo Switch was a huge success during the isolation of the 2020 pandemic, breaking the record for most digital downloads of a console game in a single month. “
The winners will be announced on May 6, so we’ll have to wait and see if Animal Crossing gets a place or not. In recent years, games such as Pokémon Red and Green, The Legend of Zelda and Super Mario Bros. have been accepted.
