According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Green Bay Packers cleared the boundary space by restructuring Adrian Amos’ safety contract.
Amos, who signed a four-year, $ 36 million deal with the Packers in 2019, was to count $ 10.3 million against the team limit in 2021. His deal included a base salary of $ 4 million. $ 9 million and a $ 1.5 million list bonus. both become a signature bonus to free up space at the limit.
However, any boundary space released in 2021 would move to 2022, when the Amos boundary already exceeds $ 10.9 million. The Packers may be comfortable pulling the money forward knowing that Amos could be the top contender for a contract extension after the 2021 season.
Amos, who turns 28 in April, reaches a fantastic 2020 season. He was second in safety in Pro Football Focus.
Restructuring its deal by converting the signature bonus could free up nearly $ 3 million, according to Over the Cap. If the restructuring involves an extension or the addition of voidable years, the savings could be even greater.
The Packers exceeded the $ 9.4 million salary cap as of Friday. The team will have to be under the cover next Wednesday, the start of the new league year.
Other players capable of making restructurings or extensions include quarterback Aaron Rodgers, receiver Davante Adams, punters Za’Darius Smith and Preston Smith and offensive Billy Turner.
