The pandemic begins the year with a record number of nearly 14,000 deaths a day

The World Health Organization (WHO) today reported 13,997 deaths in the last 24 hours, the highest figure in a covid-19 pandemic year, bringing the total death toll since the onset of the health crisis to 1, 8 million.

The cases of COVID-19 are close to 82 million, 693,000 of them recorded in the last day, an increase over previous days but still not reaching the record figure of December 20 (841,000 infections in one day) .

America, which reported 6,300 deaths on the last day of 2020, totals 858,000 deaths, while Europe recorded 5,900 deaths and totals 582,000 since the start of the pandemic.

The United States remains the country with the highest number of deaths (335,000), followed by Brazil (193,000), India (148,000) and Mexico (124,000).

They are followed by four European countries: Italy (74,000 dead), the United Kingdom (73,000), France (64,000) and Russia (57,000).

Patients recovered on the planet amount to 59 million, while of the 22 million active cases 0.5 percent (106,000) are in serious or critical condition.
